Open Source and the African Programmer

Open Source is really a big thing these days, from software giants to individual developers, nobody can really turn a blind eye on the milestone Open Source is making and will continue to make.

My question here is, why are too few developers in Africa involved in Open Source? Its not easy to understand this problem when you have not been a developer in Africa. Too many to these developers are highly under paid and they continually struggle to make ends meet, this forces them into only working to get a better standard of living. I am a developer myself and I am too familiar with this situation, we sometimes undertake projects that is highly below our skill and talent, yet you see us working on such projects only because we are too underpaid.

Back to the issue at hand, this is why most of these developers hardly get the time to partake in open source projects, making free software is just not what a typical programmer in Africa has in mind.

My believe is that, until the African Programmer is better rewarded, this problem will continue to linger on.
